Hidden across the mesmerizing blue waters of Fethiye, right in front of the stunning Ölüdeniz view, lies a treasure trove of history: Saint Nicholas Island. This small island enchants visitors not only with its natural beauty but also with its deep historical roots and mystical atmosphere. Easily accessible by a short boat trip from Ölüdeniz, Saint Nicholas Island is also known as Gemiler Island and takes its name from one of the most significant figures of the Christian world, Saint Nicholas.

Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus) was born in Patara and spent part of his life in Myra (Demre) as a religious leader. This island is filled with churches and chapels built in his memory. Known as an important Christian settlement between the 4th and 6th centuries, the island also hosts Byzantine-era church ruins. As you set foot on the island, these ancient structures take you on a journey deep into history. Basilicas, tombs, and mosaics are among the remnants that reveal the island’s role as a sacred place.
