Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus) was born in Patara and spent part of his life in Myra (Demre) as a religious leader. This island is filled with churches and chapels built in his memory. Known as an important Christian settlement between the 4th and 6th centuries, the island also hosts Byzantine-era church ruins.
